Care home visits to resume

Guidelines published by the Scottish Government on Wednesday 24 February, support care providers to resume visiting for up to two designated visitors per resident.
Visitors will need to wear face coverings and any PPE requested by the care home, and are strongly encouraged to take a COVID test on-site.
While visiting may sometimes still be restricted, for example, in the event of an outbreak at a care home, the expectation will now be that homes will facilitate regular weekly contact as long as certain safety conditions are met.
VISITING CARE HOMES
- visiting a loved one in care homes is classed as essential travel – exempt from travel restrictions
- indoors: essential visits only
- outdoors: visits to the care home to see loved ones via garden or window visits, arranged with care home in advance. As a result of the additional risk posed by the new variant, garden visits should now be limited to one visitor and visits by children and young people should be suspended.
From early March (or before, if care homes are ready), care home visiting guidance will change to allow each care home residents to:
- receive up to two indoors visits a week
- have up to two designated indoor visitors – but only one person can visit at a time
Essential visits should be supported at all times. Garden or window visits are also allowed.
