11th April 2017 Investing in staff and residents with Playlist for Life training
Staff, residents and families at two care homes will benefit from a training day specifically designed to help care for people living with dementia. Eight staff members from both Cochrane Care Home and Ranfurly Care Home will take part in the day at the end of February. A first for both homes, the training will focus on how to implement the ‘Playlist for Life’ tool through a day of workshops. The aim is for staff to become Playlist project leaders and understand the benefits that personalised music can have on the health and wellbeing of people living with dementia. Research has highlighted the potential music has at alleviating dementia symptoms such as anxiety and agitation, and reduce the need for medication. The Playlist for Life initiative uses discussion and communication skills to build a personalised playlist for a person living with dementia, to show the effect music can have on the brain and the benefits this can bring to the individual, their carers and their family. The resident can then have access to the playlist at all times, to relive memories and reduce symptoms. Donna Neil, Care Home Manager at Cochrane said: “We are really looking forward to taking part in the Playlist for Life training. We are dedicated to finding ways to help those who are living with dementia, and I am confident this project will help many of our residents and their families.” Margaret Rooney, Ranfurly Care Home Manager said: “The training will help enhance the lives of residents living with dementia, but also their families and staff at both homes. It should be a great training session, and something different for everyone to take part in.”
